Java for OS X is an Apple vetted Java environment, designed to be as highly integrated as possible within its own operating system. Java for OS X has been created to mix OS X's advanced technologies and Java's adaptability and omnipresence on almost all software platforms out there. If you have not yet installed Apple's Java OS X 2012-006 update, then you are still using a version of Apple Java 6 that includes the plug-in and the Java Preferences app. See 'Note for Users of OS X that Include Apple Java 6 Plug-in'. There can be multiple JDKs installed on a system, as many as you wish. Jan 14, 2011 Oracle does not produce a jvm or JDK for OS X. If you have a core 2 duo or newer CPU you can get the Java 6 update for 10.5 from apple software update. Otherwise you have to get 10.6. Feb 26, 2012 OpenJDK 7 on Apple G5 PowerPC on Mac OS X 10.5.8 Apple G5 Power Mac. This particular version uses X11 since the Cocoa-UI is just now being sorted out in the JDK 7 mac-osx port. It is highly likely that we will be stuck with X11 since the effort is so large to get the support in currently. I tried to run a simple swing app.
This article shows you how to install Java on Mac OSX, and also how to do Java/JDK version switching.
Tested with
Note
On Mac OSX, Java should installed in this folder; it is Mac’s standard.
We will show you two ways to install Java JDK on Mac, via the popular Homebrew package manager and manually installation.
1. Homebrew
1.1 Install Homebrew and update it.
1.2 Add adoptopenjdk/openjdk.
1.3 Find all available JDK.
The output may vary.
1.4 Java 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, choose one to install.
This example will install Java 8 and 11 for testing.
1.5 Where Java is installed?
/usr/libexec/java_home -V
Homebrew will install the JDK at folder
/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/ , and this folder is Mac’s standard folder for Java installs.
1.6 Test it, by default, Mac takes the highest version.
1.7 How to do version switching? Refer to below 3. version switching
2. Manual installation
The example shows you how to download the early access JDK 14 and install it on Mac OSX.
Steps
2.1 Download the early access JDK 14 from the OpenJDK website.
2.2 Extracts tar file to
/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines
2.3 Export
JAVA_HOME .
Find out where is JDK 14.
Create or edit the existing
~/.bash_profile with a text editor.
Export
JAVA_HOME , save and exit.
~/.bash_profile
Reflect the changes
2.4 Test it.
3. Version Switching![]()
In this tutorial, we installed the Java 8 and Java 11 via
Homebrew (Step 1), and Java 14 manually (Step 2), so this Mac has three versions now. And the Mac is using the JDK 14.
Note
There are tools like jEnv to manage the Java version switching, but I prefer to manage with export JAVA_HOME manually, it’s simple and easy to understand, no black box magic.
Java Jdk
3.1 Create or edit the existing
~/.bash_profile with a text editor like vim or nano, export JAVA_HOME to the specified JDK we want to use on Mac.
The above changes will make
JAVA_HOME point to JAVA 8.
3.2 Reflect the changes.
Done.

If you would like to learn Java programming, the best way is by writing Java codes by yourself. To compile the Java codes then you need Java Development Kit (JDK). It can be Oracle JDK or OpenJDK. This post guides you how to install Oracle JDK 8 on Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite. It should be also applicable for previous version of OS X such as OS X Maverick, Mountain Lion, and OS X Lion. At the time of this post written, the latest version of JDK is JDK 8 Update 25.
Basically I previously had written an article how to install Java SE 7 / JDK 7 on Mac OS X Lion. I just would like to rewrite on the newest version.
1. Download Oracle JDK 8 from Oracle website. You need to accept license agreement to be able to download the file. Make sure you select the Mac OS X x64 platform (jdk-8u25-macosx-x64.dmg).
2. Double-click the downloaded file ‘jdk-8u25-macosx-x64.dmg’ and follow the on-screen installation.
3. Once it is successfully installed, it is installed inside /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines folder.
4. Verify that the system is now using JDK 8.
5. If you would like to uninstall JDK 8, simply remove the jdk1.8.0_25.jdk
Java For Mac 10.6.8
Hopefully this tutorial helps you on installing JDK 8 / Java SE 8 on Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
